A significant voltage spike that resulted in a large-scale power outage across Spain and Portugal has been recognized as the "most serious" power disruption in Europe during the last two decades, and represents a pioneering occurrence of its category, according to a recently published investigation.
Damian Cortinas of the group of electrical system controllers announced that this notable situation marked the first known blackout to be specifically initiated by overvoltage, which happens when excessive power voltage gathers within a grid.
