The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with other members appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in May.
