Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
